In August this year, London Fire Brigade were called to a 12 storey block of flats, after reports of water emanating from the balcony area of an apartment on the fourth floor. The crew discovered that in fact the water was being created by a sprinkler system, as a fire had occurred inside the flat. This had started in the kitchen causing one sprinkler head to open, effectively extinguishing the flames. The chaos and threat to life of an out of control fire, in a multi occupancy dwelling like this can only be imagined.
Again in August but further North, Leicester Fire & Rescue Service attended a Kickboxing Club in the early hours of the morning, where a fire was found to have broken out in the roof space. One sprinkler had operated and the fire had been prevented from spreading to other areas of the roof or building. These life saving systems are crucial wherever there is a risk of fire, but should go hand in hand with a reliable alarm, adequate maintenance, and an allocated management procedure, according to the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association [BAFSA].
A shocking disclosure that 59 schools in the South Yorkshire area have experienced fire break out in the past 2 years, has prompted a local newspaper to begin a campaign for all schools in this area to be fitted with sprinklers. A quote from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service states that:-
“When you consider the huge costs associated with a school fire such as rebuilding, temporary relocation, loss of equipment and pupil’s academic work, it seems like an obvious move to install a sprinkler system, but many schools still don’t. Above everything else, sprinklers give added protection to the pupils and staff at the school, and the firefighters who respond to tackle the fire”.
