Council Owned Tower Blocks in Leeds to Receive Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heating is one of the most effective and energy efficient ways to heat a property. This fact hasn’t escaped Leeds City Council, who have engaged utilities contractor Cenergist for a project in Leeds. Cenergist will design, build and deliver the ground source heating systems by 2024. The six network clusters are planned at a cost of £24m, which will see 26 tower blocks connected to ground source heat pumps [GSHPs]. The initiative, named ‘clustering for warmth’ will provide low cost heating, while helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings.
Tower blocks in Armley, Harehills, Gipton, Killingbeck, Seacroft and Little London will have upgrades to their existing heating and hot water systems. Councillor Debra Coupar, deputy leader of Leeds City Council, said: “By upgrading some of our coldest homes to make them fit for the future, this ambitious scheme will not only help reduce fuel poverty but crucially also enable thousands of tenants to save money on their energy bills.”
Director of energy infrastructure at Cenergist, Dan Ludgate, said: “In deploying Cenergist’s GSHP solutions, not only can we help Leeds City Council achieve its goal in decarbonising the city, but we can also help to serve the needs of the community, by providing significant bill savings for residents”.
Along with air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps represent game changing innovation. The more popular they become, the lower the initial cost of installation will become.
Ground source heat pumps are extremely versatile systems, providing heating, hot water, air cooling and balanced humidity. These geothermal pumps transfer heat from heat naturally stored in the ground. A network of underground pipes transports the heat from its source to the target area where it is released.
