The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive [RHI] scheme is a financial incentive introduced by the government, in an effort to cut carbon emissions and promote the use of renewable energy. The RHI contributes towards the UK meeting its EU renewable energy targets, and encourages homeowners to install and run green energy systems. These include air source heat pumps, biomass systems and solar energy, all systems which use natural resources to produce energy for heat and hot water. It is important when considering signing up for the scheme, to check out the Ofgem or Energy Saving Trust websites for information about the scheme. Once you install your renewable heating technology and your installer has tested and signed off the system, you have up to 12 months to apply for the scheme. To apply you must have obtained an MCS certificate for your installation and a domestic Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the property. The four systems eligible are biomass boilers and stoves, ground source and air source heat pumps and solar thermal panels.
If you decide to sell your property and intend to include the system, you need to inform the RHI [contact details via the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234], 28 days in advance of the sale going through, as you will no longer own it. Doing this avoids any ineligible overpayment hassles or the need to organise any repayments required. Failure to do this also presents a problem for the new owners should they wish to join the scheme. You will continue to receive payments up until the day before the legal transfer of the property is complete.
