Silvertown [great name] has been hiding it’s light and potential under a bushel for far too long, and overshadowed by nearby Canary Wharf, the East London town is earmarked for big changes. The first phases of a £5 billion regeneration for the town, is planned to start early in 2018. The central focus of the scheme is Millenium Mills, a 20th century flour mill, now derelict. The ultimate goal of the project will see the mill turned into a dynamic commercial workspace.

The flour mill, which has been used as a backdrop for films and TV, is set for completion in 2019 and should coincide with the completion of the Crossrail at Custom House station. New infrastructure costing £100 million in the area will include the construction of a £20 million bridge connecting the station to some of the residential units. The work will be designed by some major names in the world of architecture like Herzog & de Meuron, Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, Adjaye Associates, Mecanoo, David Chipperfield and OMA, to name a few. There will be 3,000 new homes, 465,000sq m of commercial space,restaurants, shops, a hotel and cultural and community facilities.

It is hoped that Silvertown will eventually prove successful in forming it’s own unique identity with pioneering businesses, boosted employment and a community spirit. Spaces will be made available for businesses that wish to showcase what they do, and companies will be encouraged to communicate and cooperate. Silvertown and the Royal Docks were featured in the London Festival of Architecture in 2016, introduced as part of the Derelict London Tour. The tour looked at a selection of iconic but unused buildings such as Millennium Mills, the derelict Tate Institute and a Victorian church, now the Brick Lane Music Hall.
